Drop recorded due to lower tourist influx for Paris Olympics

The Air France-KLM Group has recorded a 13% annual decline in net profit, closing the third quarter of 2024 with 824 million euros. The Franco-Dutch company attributes this decline to the lower influx of tourists to Paris during the Olympic Games. However, this quarterly result contributed positively to the balance of the first nine months of the year, with the group accumulating a net profit of 510 million euros, although lower than in the same period of 2023.

In the quarterly report, revenue increased by 3.7% to EUR 9 billion, and the number of passengers carried increased by 3.5% to 27.85 million. This increase is slightly lower than the capacity expansion, which was 3.6%. As a result, the aircraft occupancy rate decreased by 0.4% to 89.3%, with a 1% decrease in unit revenue. In addition, the average ticket price decreased by 0.6% and by 2.8% on long-haul flights.

Operating margin remained solid at 13.1% despite a 2.4 percentage point decline in the quarter, falling to 5.1% in the nine months, a decrease of 2.7 points.

Air France-KLM also highlighted in its financial communications that the upcoming tax increase of one billion euros in the airline sector, foreseen by the French Government's 2025 budget law, could negatively impact the group's profitability and competitiveness. This tax increase could translate into an increase of 280 million euros in taxes paid by the consortium in 2025, with an estimated negative operating impact of between 90 and 170 million euros. It is important to note that this tax increase could not be fully absorbed by an increase in airline ticket prices.
