Aircraft strike in Canada

Some flights scheduled for Friday 28 June 2024 are at risk

Some flights to Canada scheduled for tomorrow, June 28, 2024, and in the coming weeks are at risk. The reason is the strike of engineers and maintenance workers of the Canadian company WestJet Airlines, one of the main airlines in the North American country. The air carrier, in particular, operates a flight in Italy, with the "Leonardo da Vinci" airport in Rome-Fiumicino.

The mobilization comes 24 hours after the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (Amfa) union rejected the new contract offer submitted by the Canadian company. Only a few days ago the workers' representatives had canceled a strike and agreed to return to the negotiating table, but WestJet's proposal was not in line with the employees' demand for better working conditions and higher wages.

The airline said it would offer a salary increase of +22% over four years. The sector union Amfa has informed that the strike could occur as early as tomorrow, 28 June. Meanwhile, during the previous mobilization, which took place last week, the North American carrier was forced to cancel 40 flight connections, leaving 6,500 passengers stranded.
