Vietnam Airlines and Vietcombank sign MoU for purchase of 50 new aircraft

Strategic investment will modernize fleet and expand routes of Vietnamese carrier

The official signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the national carrier Vietnam Airlines and Vietcombank, one of the major banking institutions in Vietnam, was held yesterday, on April 23, 2025, in Hanoi. The agreement establishes the collaboration between the two State entities for the structuring of the financing necessary for the acquisition of 50 narrow-body aircraft.

The aim is a major investment, central to Vietnam Airlines’ fleet development strategy for the period 2025-2035, with a long-term vision extending to 2040. The investment in the new aircraft, whose financing will be arranged by Vietcombank with disbursements expected between 2026 and 2032, aims to enhance the airline’s operational capacity, modernize its fleet and expand its route network. In particular, the focus will be on expanding short- and medium-haul routes in key markets in Southeast Asia, Northeast Asia and the domestic market, areas characterized by growing demand for air transport and strong competition.

During the ceremony, the heads of both parties highlighted the crucial role of this partnership in the context of the country's infrastructural and economic development. The acquisition of the 50 narrow-body aircraft will enable Vietnam Airlines to improve operational efficiency, reduce fuel consumption and emissions, in line with its long-term sustainability goals. In addition, the expansion of the fleet will provide passengers with more choice of products and services, strengthening Vietnam Airlines' position as a major player in the international aviation market and promoting Vietnam's image as a global destination.

The agreement further strengthens the long-standing cooperation between Vietnam Airlines and Vietcombank, which has already materialized in the past with the financing for the purchase of Airbus A-350 and Boeing -787 wide-body aircraft, and for the expansion of the Airbus A-321 fleet.
