Sweden and Netherlands step up military support for Ukraine

From Stockholm, aid for $1.6 billion and focus on air defense; from The Hague, $541 million and focus on drone aircraft

Sweden announced today a massive military aid package for Ukraine, allocating SEK 16 billion (about $1.6 billion). The decision, which is the largest Swedish contribution since the start of the conflict, brings the Nordic country's total support to SEK 29.5 billion for the current year alone, with a total commitment of SEK 80 billion from 2022.

Swedish Defence Minister Pål Jonson also today stressed the seriousness of the situation on the ground, saying: "Russia started the war, and we need to support Ukraine to reverse this trend". The aid package aims to strengthen Ukraine's defence capabilities in critical areas such as air defence, artillery, satellite communications and maritime dominance. Specifically, the Swedish aid package includes air defence systems, which are essential to counter Russian air attacks. This support is crucial to protect Ukraine's critical infrastructure and civilian population. There have also been reports of the JAS 39 Gripen C/D fighter jet. Initially, there was talk of a possible delivery of these aircraft, but the decision was later changed so as not to interfere with the entry into service of the F-16. However, Sweden has allocated funds to preserve the Gripen C/D fleet, leaving open the possibility of a future delivery.

Stockholm also announced the delivery of two ASC 890 advanced air surveillance aircraft, an evolved and upgraded variant of the Saab 340 AEW&C.

In parallel, the Netherlands announced a €500 million (about $541 million) contribution to finance a drone project in Kiev. This funding is part of a € 2 billion accelerated support plan planned for 2025, which also includes aid for air defense, ammunition and maritime equipment.

Sweden has also proposed to allocate an additional 40 billion kronor to support Ukraine in 2025, demonstrating a long-term commitment to supporting the embattled country. A significant part of the new Swedish aid package, around 9.2 billion kronor, will be used to purchase equipment for Ukraine, with a focus on the ability of Swedish industry to produce the required material in a timely manner.

Minister Jonson stressed the need for a coordinated European response, saying: "Now is the time for all European countries to really step up support for Ukraine". The Swedish package includes artillery systems, air defense systems, small combat boats, machine guns and small-caliber ammunition. In addition, Sweden will provide support to the Ukrainian defense industry through the "Danish model", a cooperative mechanism for purchasing equipment.
