Earthquake devastates Myanmar and Thailand: airports closed, mobility in crisis

Commercial air routes interrupted. Urgent appeal for humanitarian aid/ 2 VIDEOS

A powerful earthquake measuring 7.7 has shaken Myanmar and Thailand, causing severe damage and paralyzing key infrastructure. The epicenter of the quake was located in Myanmar, but the repercussions were also felt strongly in the Thai capital, Bangkok.

Yangon Airport (the former capital), Myanmar's main hub, was closed to air traffic, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded. At the time of the quake, travellers waiting at the airport tried to save themselves by running toward the runways. The same thing happened at Mandalay Airport, also in Myanmar (see video below). Yangon's closure has caused a wave of inconvenience for travellers and interrupted trade routes. The Bangkok Stock Exchange also suspended afternoon trading following the quake.

The Thai government has declared a state of emergency in Bangkok, where there has been significant damage to buildings, including the collapse of a skyscraper under construction with workers trapped. In Myanmar, the state of emergency has been extended to six regions, with extensive damage to infrastructure and homes.

Burma's military junta has launched an urgent appeal to the international community for humanitarian aid. Junta spokesman Zaw Min Tun stressed the need for immediate assistance, with hospitals overwhelmed by the wounded and calls for blood donations.

Beyond the airport closures that may be expected due to the damage sustained, the earthquake had a significant impact on general mobility, with damaged roads and disruptions to ground transportation. In summary, while Yangon Airport was the most obvious closure, it is reasonable to assume that the earthquake also caused disruptions and interruptions in other parts of the region's air and ground transportation network.

The Farnesina (Italian Foreign Affairs Ministry) is closely monitoring the situation and at the moment there are no Italians involved. Emergency contacts have been provided for compatriots who need assistance.

Below, two videos show the intensity and devastation caused by the earthquake, at Mandalay airport and in the entire affected area:
