Tajani meets with NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe
Analyzed the main challenges for Euro-Atlantic security

At the centre of the conversation was the centrality of the relationship with the United States for Italian foreign policy and the growing relevance of the European pillar of NATO for the defence of the Old Continent
The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani, today welcomed the NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe and Commander of US Forces in Europe, Gen. Christopher G. Cavoli, at the Farnesina (Italian Ministry's headquarters).
The discussion between the Minister and the General focused on the centrality of the relationship with the United States for Italian foreign policy and the growing importance of NATO’s European pillar for the defence of the Old Continent.
During the meeting, they analysed the main challenges to Euro-Atlantic security, with particular attention to developments in the conflict in Ukraine. Minister Tajani reaffirmed Italy’s commitment to achieving a just and lasting peace, ensuring full involvement of both Ukraine and the European Union in the negotiations, as also was confirmed in discussions with the United States Secretary of State Rubio. Regarding future security arrangements in Ukraine, Minister Tajani emphasised the importance of involving the UN Security Council in defining any potential military mechanisms.
Tajani and Cavoli agreed on the need to ensure adequate attention to challenges from the Southern Flank and the Mediterranean, in line with a 360-degree approach that protects NATO from threats in all strategic directions. In this context, they shared the view that the security and stability of the African continent and the Western Balkans region are of crucial importance. Tajani also reiterated Italy’s commitment to increasing defence spending to reach 2% of rhe GDP, including through its separation from the Stability Pact.
General Cavoli expressed his gratitude to Italy –the leading contributor of troops to NATO operations and missions– for its active engagement within the Alliance. He also commended the work carried out by the “NATO Strategic Direction-South Hub” in Naples, which is becoming an increasingly important reference point for NATO’s presence in both the Mediterranean and Africa.
Gen. Christopher G. Cavoli, whose family originates from Pinzolo (Trento), has held his current position since July 2022. Over a military career spanning nearly forty years, he has served in various roles in his home country as well as in Europe and Asia.
