An Antonov An-26B/100, registration UR-ELB and operated by Air Urga for the United Nations, was involved in an accident a few hours ago at Ndélé airport, in the north-east of the Central African Republic. The aircraft, probably engaged in a cargo flight, suffered significant damage during an attempted landing on an unpaved runway. Initial information indicates that the aircraft suffered a collapse of the left main landing gear, in addition to significant damage to the left wing section and one of the propellers. At the moment, two people have been injured and have been promptly evacuated for medical treatment.
The black box will be sent to Bangui for analysis by the investigation office of the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation to determine the exact cause of the incident. The condition of the dirt runway and the operating environment of the region may have contributed to the difficulties encountered during the landing.
The United Nations has been present in the Central African Republic for several years, providing support to the peace and reconciliation process. Their aircraft are essential for transporting personnel, supplies and humanitarian aid to the most remote areas of the country, where airport infrastructure is often limited and flight conditions are particularly challenging.
