Olbia intends to name the airport after Prince Karim Aga Khan IV

The request was officially submitted today by the Municipality to the competent authorities

The recent passing of HH Karim Aga Khan has deeply shaken the community of Olbia, prompting the Municipality to pay homage to the late prince. Mayor Settimo Nizzi, on the occasion of the proclamation of mourning for the city, expressed his deepest condolences. Today, with a council resolution proposed by the mayor, the Municipality of Olbia has officially submitted the request to name the city's airport after Prince Karim Aga Khan IV, thus giving rise to the new name "Olbia-Costa Smeralda-Prince Karim Aga Khan IV Airport".

The reasons for this initiative are many. The Aga Khan was a key figure in the development of the island's tourism sector, promoting an entrepreneurial approach that was able to enhance the Gallura territory while respecting the environment. Already in 1963 he founded Alisarda, a Sardinian air carrier that later evolved into Meridiana and then into Air Italy, facilitating access to Sardinia since the dawn of the "Costa Smeralda" and contributing decisively to the creation and consolidation of the Olbia airport, now recognized internationally.

The measure, approved by the municipal council, aims to honor a figure whose commitment and qualities - sensitivity, generosity and strategic vision- have left an indelible mark on the history and development of the local territory. The institutional representatives highlighted how the adoption of this new name can strengthen the identity and prestige of the airport, a symbol of a growth path that has made Sardinia a sought-after destination in the world tourism panorama. The next step will be the examination of the proposal in the competent bodies, with the aim of making the tribute to the Prince official, a tangible expression of a legacy that has transformed the face of Sardinian tourism.
