Washington: military helicopter collides with passenger plane in flight

A total of 67 people were involved; the death toll is still uncertain /VIDEO

Last night in Washington there was a mid-air collision between a Bombardier CRJ-701ER aircraft registration N709PS, of the American Eagle company but operated by Psa Airlines (over 500 daily flights made on behalf of AA), and an American military helicopter Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk. On board the civilian aircraft were 64 people, while the military aircraft was carrying three soldiers.

The accident occurred near "Ronald Reagan" Washington National Airport, and both aircraft crashed into the Potomac River. The plane, departing from Wichita, Kansas, was approaching runway 33 of the airport from Wichita, Kansas. The cause of the tragedy is under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), but according to local press reports, an act of terrorism is not suspected.

Several emergency teams were involved in the rescue operations: by dawn, 12 bodies had been recovered, but the official number of victims has not yet been confirmed. Following the accident, air traffic at the airport was suspended for several hours, with diversion to other airports.
