Hong Kong Airport: system for simultaneous flight operations on three runways launched

The 3RS allows multiple aircraft to take off and land simultaneously

Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) has launched its new 3-Runway Simultaneous operation System (3RS), significantly increasing the airport's capacity and further strengthening Hong Kong's position as a major international aviation hub. The aim is to serve 120 million passengers and handle 10 million tonnes of cargo annually in about 10 years from now.

The commissioning ceremony was attended by senior officials and John KC Lee, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, and authoritative representatives of the Republic of China.

Construction work on the infrastructure required for the program began in August 2016. The new north runway was officially commissioned in November 2022. Since then, the airport has continued to operate with two runways, with the Centre Runway temporarily closed for reconfiguration work, which included re-grading the runway surface, building new taxiways on and off the asphalt strip, and other major works.
