Solarig Spain invests €1.15 billion to produce SAF aviation fuel

New plant in Teruel, Aragon, with capacity of over 75,000 tons per year

Equivalent to 33,000 flight connections between Zaragoza and London (considering a 50% sustainable fuel mix)

Solarig is advancing in the development of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (Saf) production projects, with a portfolio that exceeds 400,000 tonnes of annual sustainable fuel production in Spain. Specifically, Solarig today announces the development of a plant for the production of sustainable aviation fuel in the province of Teruel. The project, called "Turboleta Saf" , will have a production capacity of more than 75,000 tonnes per year, equivalent to 33,000 flights between Zaragoza and London (considering a 50% Saf blend). The plant, located in the Platea industrial park in Teruel, will extend over approximately 10 hectares and is expected to be operational before 2030.

On the occasion of COP29 and the urgency of reducing CO2 emissions, Solarig highlights the importance of sustainable fuel as an essential tool to decarbonize the aviation sector, responsible for almost 14% of global CO2 emissions attributable to transport. This project will decarbonize 340,000 tons of CO2 per year and capture and reuse 160,000 tons of CO2 annually.

With an estimated total investment of €1.15 billion, "Turboleta Saf" will include dedicated renewable resources directly connected to the industrial plant, such as a solar photovoltaic plant, a wind farm and a battery storage system. The plant will create nearly 1,200 qualified jobs, direct and indirect: 1,000 during the construction phase and over 180 during the operation, promoting local development and leveraging existing infrastructure.

Miguel Ángel Calleja, President and CEO of Solarig, said: “This new facility places Teruel at the forefront of the development of sustainable fuel production. We take advantage of the region’s natural resources, such as sun, wind and water, as well as biomethane and biogenic CO2 from our own facilities, derived from the area’s agro-livestock waste. This project, supported by national, regional and local public bodies, as well as leading companies in the aviation sector, adds to our portfolio in Spain, which exceeds 400,000 tonnes of Saf per year".

Nearby infrastructures, such as the Teruel and Zaragoza airports, will benefit from this new plant thanks to the availability of locally produced sustainable fuel. This plant will contribute significantly to the decarbonisation of the air transport sector, economic growth, the strengthening of Teruel's industrial fabric and the improvement of the quality of life, creating quality jobs in the Autonomous Community of Aragon.

As part of the financial consolidation of the project, Solarig has submitted "Turboleta Saf" to the initiative “Incentive Program for Renewable Hydrogen Production and Consumption Projects (Clusters or Valleys)”, launched by the Institute for Diversification and Energy Saving (Idae), financed through the Next Generation EU funds. Through this initiative, the company intends to contribute to the European climate objectives and promote the large-scale production and consumption of renewable hydrogen and its derivatives.

"Turboleta Saf" joins the "Numantia Saf" project that Solarig is developing in Soria, also in Spain, in addition to other projects in the country, which together will produce more than 400,000 tons of sustainable fuel per year in Spain.
