Ukraine terminates air transport deal with Iran
But the measure will have little impact on an airspace already closed to civil aviation since 2022
The Ukrainian government has cancelled the bilateral air transport agreement with Iran, signed in Tehran on July 9, 1993. This was announced in recent days by the permanent representative of the Ukrainian Cabinet of Ministers Taras Melnychuk in a post on Telegram, as reported by "Ukrinform". A political rather than operational decision, since Ukrainian airspace has been closed to civil aviation since the beginning of the conflict with Russia, that is, since February 2022.
However, the spokesperson did not explain the reasons that led to the termination of the agreement, which are easy to understand and can be seen as part of Tehran's support for Putin, in particular regarding the transfer of Iranian weapons to Russia. This has already led many European Union member States, and subsequently the EU Council, to interrupt bilateral air transport agreements with Iran.
