Chinese military escalation against Taiwan

Aggressive maneuvers in the delicate area of the Strait

Taiwan's Ministry of Defense has said it is on high alert due to frequent Chinese military actions in the surrounding airspace and sea. This increase in Chinese military activities reflects the growing tension between China and Taiwan, which, despite the lack of official recognition as a sovereign state by most countries and the United Nations, persists in defending its sovereignty. Beijing's maneuvers are widely seen as attempts to intimidate and show force against the island.

Over the past 24 hours, China has mobilized 27 military aircraft and 14 ships in the waters and airspace of the Taiwan Strait, the ministry said. Of those, 15 aircraft crossed the strait's median line, an unofficial but tacitly recognized boundary, violating Taiwan's Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) at various points. Since Oct. 1, the tally stands at 95 Chinese fixed-wing aircraft and 45 ships heading toward the area, underscoring Beijing's goal of consolidating control over the self-governing island. The latest military activities have coincided with celebrations for the National Day of the Republic of China, Taiwan's official name.
