Italy. Bergamo airport main runway reopened yesterday evening

Its surface resurfacing needed after four tyres burst on landing Ryanair plane

Runway made unusable for a length of 450 meters. Various operations carried out before the resumption of activity at the airport

Sacbo (Bergamo-Orio al Serio Airport Management Company) announces the reopening of the main runway of its airport, which occurred yesterday evening. Operations resumed regularly with the landing of the Norwegian flight arriving from Helsinki. The runway has been closed since 8:00am because it was made unusable for a length of 450 meters by the bursting of four tires (and not one as initially reported) of the rear landing gear of Ryanair flight FR 846, coming from Barcelona-El Prat. No consequences for the 161 passengers and crewmembers.

The pavement restoration works were carried out after the removal of the aircraft that had remained stationary on the runway, thanks to the intervention of specialized technicians with the supervision of Sacbo personnel and the Fire Department. The damaged pavement was then milled, asphalted and the horizontal markings restored, followed by acceptance tests that allowed flight operations to resume.

“In just over six hours, a job was done that would normally take much longer –emphasizes Giovanni Sanga, president of Sacbo–. Excellent teamwork, which began with the immediate intervention of the Fire Brigade and the contribution of the technical and operational staff of Sacbo, as well as the specialized companies in charge. To the waiting passengers, many of whom had to give up their trip, our solidarity and thanks for their understanding. A special recognition for the assistance work carried out by the staff of the handling companies in the airport. A sense of gratitude to the police forces present at the airport and to those who carry out their work in airport services”.
