Italy. Olbia Airport: 350 hires in maintenance

New hope for technicians worldwide and ex-workers of Air Italy airline

Two technologically advanced hangars and 350 new hires. The aviation maintenance service at the Italian Olbia-Costa Smeralda airport, in Sardinia, restarts after a few years. This is thanks to the tender announced by Geasar and awarded by the Atitech company. It's a move made in a period in which the MRo (Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul) market is experiencing considerable expansion.

The investment announced in the new maintenance service in Olbia will be equal to 16 million euros. Moreover, a further seven million will be put on the table for the training of maintenance technicians, as well as various specialized professional figures who will work inside the Avio1 and Avio2 hangars at Italian airport. Up to six platforms will be set up here for basic maintenance and two for renovations in the Business Aviation sector.

The ten-year Atitech-Geasar agreement represents a light for many workers left on redundancy or without work after the liquidation of the former Italian airline Air Italy. It was February 11, 2020, the day on which approximately 600 employees in Sardinia (1500 in total) lost their jobs. A small part were rehired in Aeroitalia, ITA Airways and Leonardo, others saw no glimmer of hope on the horizon.

Now for them there is new hope. Something concrete, if we consider that the global MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul) market is expanding. According to forecasts, in fact, the sector is now worth 10.7 billion dollars, but there is an annual growth of +4%, which will lead to the achievement of a turnover of 14 billion by 2028.
