Roof of an Indian airport collapses: victims and injured
Heavy rains would likely have caused structural failure
A part of the roof collapses inside Terminal-1 of the "Indira Gandhi" international airport in New Delhi. Numerous cars damaged. It happened this morning at dawn, around 5:30 local time. The toll from the accident is one dead and eight injured. Departing air connections are temporarily suspended. A situation that will cause various inconveniences globally.
According to an initial reconstruction of the incident, the roof collapsed on top of some parked and stopped cars, crushing some private vehicles and taxis. The structural failure was probably caused by heavy rains, which weighed down the sheet metal of the roof, causing the support beams to break. The New Delhi firefighters responded to the scene and completed the search and rescue operations.
Parts of the capital territory of Delhi have been hit by heavy rains this week. This resulted in numerous roads being flooded. The arrival of the water had brought some respite after weeks of scorching heat, with temperatures reaching 49.9 degrees Celsius, the highest ever recorded, putting a strain on the electricity grid and energy supply of the country.
