Israel-Gaza: summit in the United States

War Cabinet member Benny Gantz flies to Washington to urge peace

The latest attempt to negotiate peace between Israelis and Palestinians has failed. A new round of talks took place in Egypt on Sunday 3 March 2024 to try to call a six-week ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. Nothing to be done: Hamas rejected Tel Aviv's request to provide a list of hostages still alive and would not provide the list of Palestinian prisoners it would like to see released. For its part, Israel boycotted the talks.

And while the pressure of national and international public opinion against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu grows, today, Monday 4 March, Benny Gantz, member of Israel's war cabinet and main political rival of the prime minister, will be in the United States where he will meet the US Deputy President Kamala Harris as well as the Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, and the White House National Security Advisor, Jake Sullivan.

It is a clear sign of how the friction between the United States and Prime Minister Netanyahu is increasing: at the center of the tensions there are two issues on which the views are divergent: how to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip; what the post-war plan should look like. Gantz's visit would have the following aims: strengthening ties with Washington, supporting Tel Aviv's war, pushing for the release of the Israeli hostages.
