Airports raise alert on Dengue fever

In January 2024 global infections exceeded 600,000 cases

The World Health Organization (WHO) recently invited travelers to check themselves if they show particular symptoms. This is due to Dengue infections which are growing rapidly globally, particularly in Brazil and Argentina. This triggered the alert at various airports throughout Italy, where checks on passengers, goods and disinfection of aircraft have been strengthened to prevent the risk of an epidemic.

In recent months, the World Health Organization had already warned of the escalation of Dengue fever: in twenty years there has been a ten-fold increase in infections, which went from 500,000 in 2000 to over 5 million in 2019. Beyond the 80% occurred in South America, with Brazil accounting for around 3 million infections. Significant increases also in Bangladesh (300,000 cases), Burkina Faso (150,000) and Vietnam (170,000).

Sporadic cases in Europe, where there are 82 endemic cases in Italy (82), but also in France (43) and Spain (3). For this reason, at the "Leonardo da Vinci" airport in Rome-Fiumicino, the level of supervision on imported goods and passengers coming from countries where the risk of contracting the Dengue disease is "frequent and continuous" has been raised, also because in January In 2024, infections exceeded 600,000 cases.
