Poland: investigation into military helicopters
Request for Polish Parliament after penalty paid to Airbus
The Polish Court of Auditors could soon open an investigation into the purchase contract, signed in 2015 between the Warsaw Government and the European manufacturer Airbus Helicopters, for 50 H-225M "Caracal" helicopters. A deal that was worth almost 3 billion Euros: it was worth, in the past, because Warsaw backed down and found itself paying a penalty of 18.5 million Euros. Now the defense commission of the Polish parliament wants to see clearly.
In 2015 the Warsaw-Airbus Helicopters deal was almost finalized and only a few details were missing. The French manufacturer had also promised to open a production and research center in Poland by 2016. However, after the Pis party won the elections, the executive changed its mind, trying to buy aircraft produced by the American Lockheed Martin and from the Italian Leonardo, who already have factories in Poland.
A controversy arose. In 2017, sources close to the Polish defense ministry said the Caracal contract had been completed. But the French Government had made it known that Warsaw's decision had been negative, for "practical and industrial" considerations. Following this, Airbus Helicopters obtained compensation to close this matter.
