At least 1100 flight connections will be cancelled at 11 German airports. This is due to a strike called for today, February 1, 2024, which is being joined by security staff working in numerous airports. Serious inconveniences were recorded, with long waits at check-in, cancelled and delayed flights. Around 200,000 passengers will remain stranded. The mobilization is having repercussions throughout Europe.

These are numerical estimates made known by Flughafenverband Adv, the German airport federation. In detail, at Frankfurt airport, the busiest in the country, 310 of the 1120 scheduled flights, including arrivals and departures, were cancelled. But more cancellations could be announced later in the day, a spokesperson for the airport's management company, Fraport, said.

"The strike started well" with a "good to very good" level of participation, said Wolfgang Pieper, the Verdi union's manager for contract negotiations with German airport companies. The workers' representatives are asking for increases in hourly wages (+2.80 Euros) and in overtime compensation. Negotiations with operators will continue next week.

The protest today affects the main airports in Germany: among these Frankfurt, Hamburg, Bremen, Berlin, Leipzig, Dresden, Erfurt, Hanover, Cologne, Duesseldorf, Dresden, Stuttgart. According to the German news agency "Dpa" at least 80% of flights in Cologne-Bonn, all take-offs in Berlin, Hamburg and Stuttgart, and a third of connections in Frankfurt will be cancelled.
