Red Sea: planes to avoid attacked ships
Freighter aircraft in support during maritime cargo transport crisis
Companies, producers and industries that usually entrust the transport of their products to ships that sail the Red Sea are now focusing on cargo planes. This is a strategy that will materialize in the coming weeks. This is due to the fact that the Houthi rebel militias have continued to launch attacks from Yemen against merchant ships headed for Israeli ports for over two months.
"We are already talking to many customers about increased air freight capacity. We will probably have 20-30 percent more proposals than usual in January", said Yngve Ruud, head of aviation at logistics company Kühne-Nagel.
Approximately 12% of the world's maritime traffic passes through the Suez Canal. Thus the Red Sea, which leads to the inlet, is located on the main East-West global trade route, a hinge between the main production centers located in Asia and consumers in Europe and the east coast of the Americas. Attacks on ships by Houthi militias now force them to find alternative routes and modes of transport.
