Air France-KLM flies high at Stock Exchange

Smith: "With ITA we tried twice in the past and it didn't work, a third would have been too much"

The Franco-Dutch aviation group Air France-KLM flies high at Stock Exchange. This morning the stock recorded an increase of +3.20%, which combined with the good performance of the last few days ago recorded a performance of +9.73%. The reason? The good reception by investors of the economic prospects of the airline until 2028, linked to the promise of a strong transformation by 2026. Excluding alliance with ITA.

"We want to play a role in the process of consolidation of the European market and all the opportunities that arise will be carefully analysed", declared the Group's CEO, Ben Smith, speaking during the Investors Days in Paris.

During the event he admitted that Air France had carefully considered privatizing ITA Airways: "We tried twice in the past and it didn't work, a third would have been too much. With the conditions set by the Italian Government the plan was too complicated, with two important airports in Milan and Rome and the constraint of establishing a hub in Fiumicino, an airport with little traffic in the winter months, such as January and February, would not have made sense for us".

Having lost this possibility, the French airline is now betting on the other alliances already underway: first of all the one with the Dutch company KLM, then the joint venture set up with the American airline Delta Air Lines, with the British Virgin Atlantic and with China Eastern which could soon be joined by Scandinavian Airlines.
