Expensive flights: increases of up to 40%
Territorial continuity eroded, State government always pays
A plane ticket to Sicily at Christmas costs up to 40% compared to December 2022. The phenomenon of high flight prices scares passengers. In view of the end-of-year holidays, prices continue to rise, in particular on bookings for connections to and from the major islands, Sardinia and Sicily. And these increases erode the funds allocated by the two Regions to ensure territorial continuity, that is regulated prices.
For example, three air carriers, including Aeroitalia and the national airline ITA Airways, have signed an agreement with the Sicily Region which provides for a 25% discount for all residents and 50% for off-site students, disabled people and travelers with ISEE (Equivalent Financial Situation Indicator, EN) less than 9360 Euros. To request the benefit there is a portal available to travellers.
However, in recent days flight fares had risen up to +33.5% compared to 2022, but now they have reached +40%. The Sicilian region promises: "We will reimburse everyone", asking citizens to advance the sums that will be reimbursed later depending on the discount to be implemented. But in fact there is something wrong. Just give a simple example, the Milan-Palermo flight operated by ITA with the outward journey on 23 December and return on 7 January costs around 783.21 Euros in economy, while the same flight with Ryanair costs 364.63 Euros.
