Iran purchases Russian military aircraft
Warplanes, trainers and combat helicopters
The Government of Iran has recently signed several agreements to purchase Russian-made military fighter planes and helicopters. It was reported by the Iranian news agency "Tasnim". This is an agreement that aims to modernize Tehran's military fleet, which in 2018 also started production of the Kowsar fighter, designed locally by Iran Aircraft Manufacturing Industrial Company (Hesa).
"Purchasing plans for Sukhoi Su-35 fighter aircraft, Mil Mi-28 attack helicopters and Yakovlev Yak-130 trainer aircraft that will join the Iranian Army's combat units have been finalized", said Iranian Deputy Defense Minister Mehdi Farahi.
Today the Iranian Air Force has a few dozen war aircraft, including Russian planes and old models of US aircraft purchased before the Islamic revolution of 1979. While waiting for Tehran to perfect the production of the Kowsar fighter (a model copy of the F- 5 produced in the 1960s by the American Northrop), Iran relies on its historic Russian partner.
