The Japanese carrier Japan Airlines will focus on hydrogen. The long-term objective is to decarbonise its scheduled air transport activities by 2050. To achieve this goal, the company has signed various collaboration agreements in recent days with as many companies operating in the sector of propulsion system development hydrogen.

"We have dedicated the last ten years to making significant progress in the development of our hydrogen technology for aircraft. We collaborate with Japan Airlines who are leading the way in ensuring a sustainable future for the aviation industry", says Josef Kallo, founder and CEO of the German company H2fly, one of the partners of the Japanese airline.

The two companies will work side by side to evaluate the feasibility of a hydrogen-electric aviation project in Japan. The Stuttgart-based company is in fact involved in developing battery systems with hydrogen cells, specific for aircraft. Together with other companies (ZeroAvia, Universal Hydrogen) they will carry out a joint study to evaluate the operational requirements: engine, maximum distance travelled, dimensions of the aircraft, safety, economic sustainability.
