Russia-Ukraine: war costs 50 billion a year

At least 50% of the state budget subsidized by the US and the EU

The Ukrainian government has reported that the war against Russia has cost 48 billion dollars a year. This is higher than peacetime State budget revenues, Kiev said, referring to the 2021 budget. For this reason, today almost 50% of the country's budget is subsidized by foreign partners, with the USA and the European Union who are the main supporters.

"The losses to the economy were less than expected. The State has adapted and continues to adapt. It is essential that Ukraine maintains macro-financial stability. This gives us a basis for a rapid recovery after the end of the war and an opportunity to replenish the budget to support the armed forces", said Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal.

In detail, the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, had announced that the Old Continent has disbursed 1.5 billion euros in macro-financial assistance to keep Ukraine's services and infrastructure active. Brussels has also pledged to provide financial support of up to 50 billion euros to Ukraine from 2024 to 2027.
