USA: Southwest increases flights
More air connections at "Ronald Reagan" airport in Washington
US air carrier Southwest Airlines announced that it will add seven new daily round-trip flights to and from Washington's "Ronald Reagan" National Airport today. It's a move that follows up on the decision of the lawmakers. An initiative fiercely contested by major US carriers such as American, United and Alaska Airlines.
Southwest instead argued that "the modest increase in flying activity can be accommodated", Delta Air Lines, which said it was strongly in favor of adding more flights to increase competition, followed the same line. The airlines that oppose this addition of flights argue instead that this provision would increase airport congestion, generating further delays.
The initiative of the Southwest Airlines company therefore gives support to the amendment introduced by the Republican Burgess Owens on a bill of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The politician said that the proposal aims to "mitigate the high costs that millions of Americans have to budget to visit our capital" and means setting up an extra route for each company that operates from the airport.
