A Piper PA-46-500TP Malibu Meridian passenger aircraft (registration N444RR) carrying two occupants crashed during an emergency landing. All the people on board were safe: the man at the controls was seriously injured, while the other occupant of the aircraft suffered minor injuries. The maneuver was carried out by a passenger after the pilot had suffered an illness.

According to an initial reconstruction, the plane had departed from the White Plains-Westchester County airport in New York and was headed for Martha's Vineyard Airport in Massachusetts. During the approach to the destination airport, the pilot, a 79-year-old man, would have collapsed. At that point the passenger, a 68-year-old woman, took over the controls of the aircraft. After a few overflights on the runway, once the undercarriage was extracted, the woman attempted an emergency landing.

Massachusetts State Police said the landing was hard and off the runway, causing the left wing of the plane to break off. The pilot was transported to the hospital in Boston in danger of life, while the passenger was discharged from the hospital in a short time.
