Brussels-Tunis: agreement on aircraft and transport
Von der Leyen: "Repatriation of migrants and possible agreement that would be good for tourism"
A Memorandum of Understanding (Mou) signed between the European Union and Tunisia. The meeting took place in the presidential palace of Carthage, in the North African country. It is a strategic partnership which provides for aid of over 250 million euros from Brussels. The Mou is based on five pillars: from the repatriation of migrants aboard aircraft to a "possible general agreement on air transport, which would be good for tourism and connections".
Against migrant traffickers "we will increase coordination in search and rescue activities". But "we also want to facilitate regular and legal migration". "We have defined a good package of measures, now we have to implement it", said the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.
The signing ceremony was attended by von der Leyen, the Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, the Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte and Tunisian President Kais Saied. Focus also on digital and the management of water resources for the agricultural and food sector. Renewable energies and technologies for the development of hydrogen were also discussed.
