USA: yes to the sale of F-16 aircraft to Türkiye

Washington-Ankara telephone call: fleet modernization in exchange for Sweden joining NATO

Turkey says yes to Sweden's entry into the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and so the United States says it is in favor of the sale to Turkey of US-made Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcon fighter planes without "limits or conditions". It emerged during the summit (11 and 12 July 2023) of the Atlantic Alliance held today and tomorrow in Vilnius, Lithuania.

US President Joe Biden has been "clear and unequivocal" in his support "and intends to move forward with the delivery in consultation with Congress", explained US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan shortly before the Alliance summit Atlantic in Lithuania.

The official announcement on the American green light for the sale of F-16s to Turkey, linked to the fact that Ankara lifts its veto on the entry of new countries into NATO, came following a telephone call between the head of the Pentagon, Lloyd Austin, and the Turkish defense minister, Yasar Guler: the two "spoke of the positive talks between Turkey, Sweden and the NATO secretary general, Jens Stoltenberg, as well as the defense support for Turkey's military modernization", stressed a Pentagon a note.
