NATO summit kicks off (11-12 July 2023)

Stoltenberg: "Historic Summit for Sweden's accession; we will guarantee arms to Kiev"

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit in Vilnius, Lithuania, kicks off today and until tomorrow (11 and 12 July 2023). It's an important period of political reaffirmation of the unity of the Atlantic Alliance in a particularly delicate moment following the Russian military aggression against Ukraine. The objective is to strengthen the posture of deterrence and defense in allied territory. Meanwhile, Turkey says yes to Sweden's entry into NATO.

"This is a historic summit because we have the go-ahead for Sweden to join, which will become a full-fledged member of the Alliance. This is good for the allied countries, for Turkey, for all of NATO and the Baltic region. As close to Sweden it is a great asset to have it in NATO, it makes everyone safer", declared today the secretary general of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, during his speech in the Public forum.

"Our task now -he added- is to ensure that Ukraine prevails in this war, guaranteeing the supply of arms and ammunition, because if Ukraine does not win as a democratic and independent nation there will be no reason to discuss the guarantees of security or entry into NATO".

Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden reports on the conversation he had with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdoğan : "I welcome the statement released this evening by Turkey, Sweden and the NATO secretary general, on the Turkish president's commitment to give the Stockholm's accession green light I look forward to welcoming Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and Sweden as our 32nd ally.
