USA: Summer at risk for air transport
Obsolete computers, shortage of pilots and air traffic controllers: inconveniences are feared
Passenger demand for air travel in the Summer 2023 season will reach an all-time high. The US aviation sector says it is ready for a record summer. However, experts fear that things could go wrong and the system could collapse. So much so that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and some airlines are trying to avoid cancellations and delays in view of the summer high season.
"We expect the summer travel season to be off the charts when it comes to demand. This is great for the travel industry, but there is no doubt that, as a country, we have invested too little in the aviation system for so much. time. This type of question is going to be an incredible stress test for that", says Geoff Freeman, president of the "US Travel Association".
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has already estimated that summer passenger volumes will exceed pre-pandemic levels. The Department of Transportation has already seen complaints increase in the first months of 2023. Among the measures taken in America so far are the reduction of scheduled connections between June and August, massive staffing campaigns and various changes related to procedures airport security.
