Leeds Airport violates night flights rules
The complaint of the city council, ready for legal proceedings
The City Council of the City of Leeds, UK, has sent a notice of breach of noise abatement rules to the management of Leeds-Bradford Airport. The fact concerns the planning of 747 more night flights than those permitted last summer. In the event of a missed step for "Summer 2023", the municipality threatens to initiate legal proceedings.
"On behalf of the management company, I sincerely apologize if the airport exceeded its permitted number of night flights in summer 2022. I want to reassure our local communities that swift action has been taken to address the issues that led to this error. The new controls, together with the continued collaboration with Leeds City Council, will ensure that the airport operates within the permitted deadlines", explained Vincent Hodder, chief executive of the operator.
Leeds City Council had launched this investigation after receiving a complaint from activists from the Group for Action on Leeds Bradford Airport (Galba). The city council then found that during the 2022 summer season there were 3667 night connections (that is 747 more than the imposed limit), breaking the rules established in the 2007 flight planning consensus. Night flights will now be monitored every month.
