On the occasion of the general strike after a train accident
A 24-hour general national strike today, March 16, in Greece. Interrupted public transport services, sea, rail and air travels. All workers in the public and private sector have been mobilized, with demonstrations scheduled in Athens and in the main cities of the country to demand truth and justice after the train accident that took place on February 28, in which 57 people died.
In the aviation sector, arms crossed for traffic controllers and civil aviation workers. This resulted in the suspension of flights to and from approximately 40 Greek airports between 00:01am and 11:59pm on 16 March. Hundreds of flights cancelled. Aegean Airlines and Olympic Air said they were forced to cancel all scheduled routes to domestic and international destinations.
The Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority (HCAA) announced that only overflights, emergency flights, Search and Rescue flights will take place today. The strike is the latest in a series of protests against the Conservative government and a political system that has repeatedly ignored calls from trade unions about safety measures to be taken in the rail transport sector.
