Aircraft. Brussels: connections from Qatar at risk
A request has been submitted to ask for the suspension of direct services
The emergency resolutions issued by the European Union Parliament to impose on the Gulf countries the protection of human rights according to Western values could jeopardize the aviation sector agreement signed in 2021 between the European Union and Qatar; Parliament's vote is expected today.
In detail, the agreement between Brussels and Qatar provides for Gulf air carriers the possibility of operating direct connections at any EU airport and vice versa. The agreement, which has already been implemented, is still awaiting ratification by the member states and the European Parliament. The process will take 5-10 years to complete.
On this agreement, the suspension of "all work on the legislative files relating to Qatar, especially as regards the liberalization of visas and scheduled visits, is requested, until the suspicions are confirmed or rejected", explains MEP Leila Chaibi, who presented an ad hoc amendment to request the suspension.
