Ukrainian war: Moscow announces separatist referendum

Vote from 23 to 27 September for annexation to Russia

The pro-Russian political authorities in the occupied territories of Ukraine have announced that referendums will be held later this month for the annexation of the republics of Donetsk and Luhansk to Russia, as well as the militarized areas of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia. The consultations will take place from 23 to 27 September. The Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, underlined how this initiative testifies to the desire of the peoples "to decide their own destiny".

The condemnation of Brussels stopped, with the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, who declared: "We strongly condemn the illegal referendums planned by the pro-Russian" specifying that "they go against the legal Ukrainian authorities and democratically elected, violate the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine and constitute a clear violation of international law". "Further restrictive measures against Moscow will be considered".
