Strikes at the two Paris airports

The mobilization could last until Sunday July 3

The airport workers' strike in France caused numerous cancellations of flight connections departing from Paris-Roissy "Charles de Gaulle" airport and other airports across the Alps today. The protest is aimed at adjusting wages to inflation. Unions said the mobilization could last until Sunday, July 3.

The protest kicked off today, on the first day of the start of the summer travel season in France. France's Direction générale de l'aviation civile (Dgac) offered an assessment of the strike effects: it reported that 17 percent of flights scheduled to depart from Paris-Roissy and Paris-Orly airports between 7 a.m. and 2 p.m. today were canceled, especially short-haul routes.

The workers' demand is to keep families' purchasing power stable by leveraging wage increases. In fact, inflation in Paris is estimated to reach 6.8 percent in September, the highest since 1985. Firefighters at "Charles de Gaulle" airport have also joined the strike, with demands for wage increases.

Specifically, airport workers are demanding a 6 percent increase retroactive to Jan. 1, 2022, while the management company is proposing 3 percent. In short, the tug-of-war continues. Meanwhile, the Paris airport authority warned of potential delays in access to terminals and check-in, passport control and security stations.
