Poland: Smolensk plane crash was an attack

Outcome of a commission to investigate the disaster in which President Kaczynski lost his life

An attack, not an accident. This is the thesis of the governmental commission of inquiry that aims to reopen the case of the plane crash in Smolensk, Russia, in which 96 people died. It was the year 2010: on board also the then Polish President Lech Kaczyński and his wife Maria; together with them there were many other important personalities, including the former head of state in exile, Ryszard Kaczorowski, the chief of staff of the Polish army, the president of the national bank, government officials and 18 parliamentarians.

The group was aboard an Air Force Tupolev Tu-154 aircraft that took off from Warsaw and headed to Smolensk, where they were to attend a commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the 1940 Katyn massacre by the Soviet secret police.

Now, according to the parliamentary inquiry committee, "the real cause of the catastrophe were two explosions which occurred while the aircraft was in the final phase of its flight". This thesis contradicts the initial investigations, which had blamed the disaster on bad weather and mistakes made by Polish pilots at the controls and Russian air traffic controllers. All is born from the discovery of traces of explosive on the fragments of the airplane.
