Record number of weapons seized at US airports
Data emerges from Transportation Security Administration monitoring
The US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) announced the statistical results of security checks carried out in 2021 in American airports yesterday. During a press conference, the division of airport monitoring, part of the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), announced that 5972 firearms were seized nationwide in the hand luggage of travelers.
"As the data suggests, passengers carrying firearms in carry-on luggage is nothing new. We have now reached an unacceptable level of inattention by owners. Simply put, one gun in a suitcase is one item too many", said TSA's director of security for Colorado, Larry Nau.
The number of seizures reached a record level not seen since 2018: the ranking sees in the lead the airport of Hartsfield-Jackson-Atlanta with 507 weapons discovered in suitcases, followed by the Dallas-Fort Worth with 317 and finally the "George Bush" in Houston with 245. Finally, it should be remembered that in the United States, travellers caught with firearms at a checkpoint at the airport, without transport permits, risk criminal and civil penalties.
