New world record for weapons trade
The Report of the International Peace Research Institute of Stockholm
According to the latest report of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (Sipri) in 2020, the sale of armaments marks a new world record. The turnover of the 100 largest arms manufacturers reached a record 472 billion Euros, an increase of 1.3% compared to 2019. A growth that has continued since 2015 and has jumped 17% in five years
All this despite the fact that the global GDP has fallen by 3.1% in the last year, due to the pandemic. In fact, the health emergency, although lockdowns have hampered deliveries ef travel by company representatives, has had little impact on military trade. Keeping demand high, therefore, is the persistent threat of terrorist attacks, tensions in the Mediterranean and the China Sea and instability in the Middle East.
In this context, US arms manufacturers have confirmed their position as the leading exporters. The top three are Lockheed Martin, followed in second place by Raytheon, third Boeing. The top 41 US companies in the sector totaled a turnover of 254 billion euros, an increase. The only European in the Top 10 is Britain's Bae Systems, which ranked sixth; Airbus is 11th.
