Israel authorizes purchase of new military helicopters

A 2.1 billion Euro plan for CH-53Ks

The Israeli Government has approved in these days a 2.1 billion Euro purchase plan for 10-15 Sikorsky CH-53K King Stallion helicopters developed by the subsidiary of the US group Lockheed Martin. This is a type of aircraft that in the intentions of the defense ministry, led by Benny Gantz, will become the official rotary-wing military transport of the Tel Aviv armed forces.

CH-53K King Stallion is a heavy-duty cargo helicopter currently manufactured by Sikorsky for the US Marine Corps. It is equipped with General Electric turbine engines. It is the largest and heaviest helicopter in the US Army. Testing began in April 2014, with the maiden flight occurring in 2015. In May, the first aircraft was delivered to the Marines.

With this rotary-wing craft, the Israeli Army aims to replace its aging CH-53 Yasur, which dates back to the late 1960s and was used in the 1969 conflict with Egypt and the 1973 Yom Kippur War. Now the fleet is too outdated and Tel Aviv has chosen to rely on American manufacturers again.
