European Parliament: question on Foggia airport’s compliance with EU regulations

By Mario Furore

"Parliamentary questions

Question for written answer E-004847/2021 to the Commission Rule 138

Mario Furore (NI)

Subject: Foggia airport’s compliance with EU regulations

In 2019, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport’s General Directorate for Airports and Air Transport authorised ‘Gino Lisa’ airport in Foggia to carry out services of general economic interest. The airport had been identified as a European civil protection base in the south-east of the European Union. However, aside from being neither officially nor substantially a civil protection base –a role played by Modugno instead– the airport has no business plan enabling it to perform services of general economic interest. Foggia is part of the core TEN-T network.

1 Does the Commission therefore intend to check whether the Italian Inter-ministerial Committee for Economic Planning funding used to extend 'Gino Lisa' airport’s runway were used correctly? Does it intend to check whether and when the Apulia regional government will actually build the regional civil protection base?

2 Does it intend to ascertain and make sense of why Aeroporti di Puglia is still failing to manage Foggia airport properly by drawing up a business compatible with the performance of services of general economic interest?
