Berlin, Tegel is no longer officially an airport

In its place, Brandenburg airport was inaugurated

People who live in Berlin have long since become accustomed to the new Brandenburg airport, an infrastructure that took several years to actually become operational (read also the article published by AVIONEWS), but which has now taken the place of another airport in the capital. German, that of Tegel. The latter is preparing to "live" its last hours as a hub in all respects. Today, Wednesday May 5, 2021, is not like many for the Teutonic airport: starting from midnight, in fact, it will definitively cease to be an airport and will become a simple area with a runway and taxiways. The fate of the next few years is already written. The company that has managed Tegel so far, Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH, will undertake to deliver the entire site to the city of Berlin: the operation will be finalized in several phases, the first of which will take place next week, to be precise on Tuesday May 11, 2021. The building that has represented the old terminal all this time will also be transformed into one of the buildings of the Beuth University of Applied Sciences, a branch to be used for training purposes. Other areas of the airport will be converted to residential use, with 5,000 apartments to be built, without forgetting the futuristic project for a technological and industrial park. Finally, for the next two and a half years, the airport authority will be responsible for managing the sites described above.
