North Atlantic Council: meeting for worrying situation in the Middle East
"Violent actions will only bring human suffering"
The meeting of the North Atlantic Council took place yesterday (NAC - the North Atlantic Council, the supreme civil instance that governs the Organization of the North Atlantic Treaty) in which the US ambassadors took part to talk about the situation in the Middle East after the killing of the Iranian commander Soleimani by the US (see AVIONEWS). Josep Borrell, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy of the EU, expressed "considerable concern about the airstrike against the Military Academy south of Tripoli which resulted in dozens of deaths and injuries. The violent actions will only bring human suffering. The risks of a further and dangerous escalation contrast with the efforts aimed at a political solution for the Libyan crisis: there is no military solution to this conflict".
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has called for moderation and not to proceed towards further escalation.
Meanwhile, tonight Italy has transferred its troops from Baghdad and Germany has also declared its intention to make the same (see AVIONEWS).
