Ukrainian war: report of Switzerland peace summit

Italian President Mattarella visits the eastern flank of NATO Moldova and Romania

There are 78 countries in favor, 15 are non-signatories. This is what emerges from the final joint document with which the world summit for Russian-Ukrainian peace, held in Switzerland, ended yesterday. The meeting aimed to outline a road map towards a ceasefire. However, countries such as China and Russia were missing from the table, which made this meeting "in vain". There are those who therefore hope for Vladimir Putin's presence at the next summit.

Meanwhile, today the President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella, is on an official visit to Moldova and Romania, both countries bordering Ukraine. In particular, Bucharest today represents the outpost of the Atlantic Alliance on the eastern flank of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), while for decades Chisinau has been subject to Russian influence and is trying to join the Union precisely to mark a precise border with Moscow .

Returning to the peace summit in Switzerland, the President of the Council of Ministers, Giorgia Meloni, was present for Italy. Among the signatories of the document are pro-Russian countries such as Hungary and Serbia. Refusing to join the final conclusions were Armenia, Bahrain, Brazil, Colombia, the Vatican (as observer), India, Indonesia, Libya, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Thailand, Iraq, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates. As you can see, there are many important countries in the Global South.

"If Putin's presence is necessary to hold the conference, then an exception can be made: in the case of peace negotiations in Ukraine with Russia, this can be an exception,” said the President of Switzerland, Viola Amherd, demanding that the Kremlin chief be allowed to attend a second global peace summit, despite the arrest warrant issued against him by the International Criminal Court (ICC).
