Italy-France cooperation in the aeronautical sector

The two countries have agreed to modernize the frigates of the Navy

An historic cooperation between Italy and France in the aeronautical sector is underway. The two countries have in fact decided to modernize the Navy frigates of Paris ("Horizon", "Forbin" and "Chevalier Paul") and Rome ("Andrea Doria" and "Caio Duilio"). The contract was awarded to the joint-ventures Naviris (Naval Group and Fincantieri) and Eurosasm (Thales and Mbda). It was communicated by the French ministry of the armed forces. The first naval unit is due for delivery in 2029.

This "important operation reflects the will of the two countries to continue to modernize and preserve their operational capabilities by adapting them to the evolution of air threats. It includes, in particular, the renewal of the Principal Anti Air Missile System (Paams) anti-air defense system and a re-foundation of the combat system", according to a note issued by the French ministry.

For Paris, the "refurbished frigates will put all Aster missiles to work, including the latest Aster 30 B1 NT Naval version, capable of responding to a broad spectrum of threats including ballistic missiles". The agreement highlights the will of France and Italy to "continue to cooperate in the naval sector with the renewal of the 'Horizon'-type air frigates" and "perpetuates a historic cooperation" between the two countries in the aeronautical sector, based on the Aster system.
