France: wave of strikes today

Expected delays and cancellations at Paris-Orly and other airports

A national mobilization proclaimed today in France to protest against the pension reform wanted by President Emmanuel Macron. More than a million demonstrators are expected in the streets in various cities of the country. Expected disruptions in the entire transport sector: air, naval, railway and local public transport connections (tram, bus and metro) could be subject to delays or cancellations.

The Direction Générale de l'Aviation Civile (Dgac) has once again asked air carriers to limit the number of flights for two weeks to and from Paris-Orly airport and some other airports (where last Thursday 32 flights) throughout the country. Massive participation in the strike by French air traffic controllers is expected, which will also cause delays for aircraft flying over the country, without making a stopover, to reach other destinations.

Meanwhile, according to a report by the Irish low-cost airline Ryanair, in the first three months of 2023 in France there were 25 days of strike among air traffic controllers, a situation that forced the company to cancel 3080 flights in total, leaving more than 500,000 passengers grounded on short notice. This latest day of protest comes after a failed meeting between the unions and Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne.
