BAE SYSTEMS TO LAY OFF NEARLY 1700 EMPLOYEES
LONDON, BAE Systems announced it is to cut 1669 workers in jobs in its regional jets business because of a downturn in orders after Sept. 11. The cuts will hit the plants in Manchester and Prestwick, in Scotland. Union leaders have considered the job losses "devastating".
