VARIG ELIMINATES POSITIONS
BRAZIL, Brazilian Varig said it will cut approximately 1700 jobs, representing 10% of the airline's workforce. In addition, the airline will immediately ground several of its planes, 13 narrowbodies and 8% of its 30-aircraft widebody fleet of 767s, DC-10s and MD-11s. The airline cancelled the introduction of the new route between Rio de Janeiro and New York.
