AUTHORITIES BLOCK COLOMBIAN AIRLINES MERGER
COLOMBIA, Colombian watchdog ruled out the merger between Avianca and Aces, which were looking to join forces. The Industry and Commerce Superintendency said that the merger would reduce consumer choice and give the companies too much domestic market power. Avianca was trying to find a potential answer to its financial problems. It incurred operating losses of 272bn pesos ($118m) last year.
